In the present study epidemiologic and mycologic investigations were conducted to study the superficial, cutaneous, subcutaneous and mucocutaneous mycoses affecting patientst attending the Dermatology Out Patient Clinic of lsmailia General Hospital during a period of one year (1994-1995).
Patients were classified according to the type of disease into:
superficial, cutaneous, subcutaneous and mucocutaneous mycoses.

The disease appeared usually asymptomatic, chronic fungal infection of the horny layer of the skin. It was seen in both sexes, but it was more prevalent in males than in females. 78% ofthe examined cases gave positive fungal culture. The etiologic agent was isolated and identified as Malassizia furfur. It was observed microscopically in the epidermal scales.

2- Cutaneous mycoses
These are diseases caused by many species of dermatophytes. In the present studies, 225 cases were examined and diagnosed. 193 cases (85.7%) gave positive fungal cultures from the various clinical specimens such as skin crusts, scales, hair and nail. 151 of these cases were cases of dermatomycosis. Tinea capitis (48 cases, 31.8%) was the most frequent dermatomycosis diagnosed. It was more prevalent in children in the age group of 1-10 years. Trichophyton violaceum and Microsporum canis were the most frequent dermatophytes isolated as the etiologic agent. The second most common and frequent dermatomycosis was tinea corporis (45 cases, 23.3.%). The most prevalent etiologic agents were Trichophyton violaceum, Microsporum canis, M. audouinii and T.rubrum.
