Abstract

Acid related diseases in the stomach (c.g.peptic ulcer, reflux ocsophagitis and Zollinger- Ellison syndrome) arc common problems of modern society. The most favourable used drugs for their management are omeprazole (Na-K proton pump inhibitor) and ranitidine (histamine receptor antagonist). The aim of the present work \\as to find out the effect of each of these drugs on the structure of the parietal cells in the stomach fundus. The study used 146 male albino rats ; their weight ranged between I 00 and 250 grams. They were divided into four groups : a control group (two rats), sham control group (16 rats), an omeprazole-treated group (64 rats) and a ranitidine-treated group (64 rats).Each drug was administered once or twice daily for five days and in a single daily dose for 30 or 90 days. The rats were sacrificed one hour, two, seven and 14 days after the last dose Selected pieces from the fundus of the stomach from each rat were prepared for examination by light and electron microscopy.
