THE EFFECTIVENESS OF A SUGGESTED STRATEGY FOR DEVELOMNGSECONDARYSCHOOL STUDENTS' TRANSLATION SKILLS

MOHAMED ATTALLAH ABDEL-AZIM ATTALLAH;

Abstract

The present study investigated the effectiveness of a suggested strategy in developing some translation skills appropriate for a group of first year secondary school students (n. = 27). Instruments included a list of translation skills (which included three main skills, contrastive linguistic competence, extra- linguistic competence and strategic competence), a pre post translation test (which divided into two parts, each part contains eleven sentences) and a suggested strategy (which comprised ten lessons, each lesson entended to develop some translation skills by prac icing some translation activit es). Results• indicated that the suggested strategy is effective in developing these translation skills. The study concluded that systemic training on translation skills which focuses on translation as a process rather than as a product and as a skill rather than as a means is needed for language programmes in secondary education. Recommendations include that much interest should be given to the place of translation in the English syllabus at the secondary stage, a separate translation class should be given at least once per two weeks in the syllabus distribution plan, and a need for implementing the new technologies in the translation classroom.
