Studies on the Relations Between the Chemical Structures of Some Locally Produced Different Base Oils and their Physical, Chemical and Performance Prop
Atif Mohamed Shebl Mattar;
Abstract
Mineral base oils are the most important components of lubricants, since they account for more than 90% of lubricant formulations. Because of the wide differences in crude oils they refined from, refining processes and treatment techniques used in their manufacture, wide differences in the resulting base stocks occur and thus not all the base oils have similar chemical and physical properties or provide equivalent performance. These variations appear in wide differences in their chemical structures, chemical properties, physical properties and their resistance for oxidation and high temperatures, and since these mineral base oils are the most important components of lubricants, so these lubricants must be affected also in their chemical physical properties and in their performance.
Accordingly, the present work aims to detect the relation between the chemical composition of the base oil stocks and their physical, chemical and performance properties, and this is achieved through choosing nine base oil samples, either locally produced or imported ones, they are:
* Three neutral base oil samples produced by Alexandria Mineral Oils Company (AMOC) which are: AMOC SN 150, AMOC SN 220/240 and AMOC SN 400/500.
* Two neutral base oil samples produced by Arnerya Petroleum Refining
Company which are: Amerya 140/160 and Arnerya 260/290.
* Two imported neutral base oil samples which are: imported Core 145 neutral base oil sample and imported Non Core 300 neutral base oil sample.
* Two bright stock base oil samples which are: one locally produced sample (from Alexandria Petroleum Company) which is bright stock No.4, (LBS-4) and imported Core 2500 bright stock sample.
