Methods of Diagnosis of Intestinal Protozoal Infections

Amal Mostafa Sayed Mostafa;

Abstract

Pathogenic intestinal protozoal parasites are among the aetiological

agents of several widespread parasitic diseases.

They are more prevalent in the underdeveloped and developing countries, where low sanitary conditions, bad hygien, environmental and ecological factors favour the spread of infection.
Entamoeba histolytic and Giardia Iamblia are the commonest intestinal protozoal parasites especially in Asia and Africa where low socioeconomic standard.
In developed countries outbreaks of Giardia Iamblia infection frequently occur in child care centers, and in adults who drink contaminated water.

Since the onset of Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), the prevalence of intestinal coccidial infections has increased and newly emerging parasites have been noted.
Cryptosporidium, Cyclospora cayetenasis, Isospora and Microspora

The new coccidian discovered in !993 are among the coccidial parasites that have been implicated as important pathogens •to man especially the immunocompromised.
The main sources of the acquisition of infections are animals, directly from person to person and from contaminated food and water supply.

Detection of these parasites in the stool by direct visualization after staining is of almost importance for accurate diagnosis of infections. Indirect means using different serological techni'\ues are resorted to when there is difficultly in seeing parasite.
DNA amplification of the parasite by PCR on different specimens obtained from the patients helped confinning the diagnosis.
