Evaluation of micro-shear bond strength of resin bonded hybrid ceramics following different surface treatments

Shaza Mokhless Youssef Fadl;

Abstract

This study was designed to evaluate the effect of three different surface treatments on the micro shear bond strength of three different ceramic materials. The materials used in this study were Lava Ultimate, Vita Enamic and IPS e.max CAD. These materials were cut into slices with the same dimensions using the isomet machine then they were all finished using silicon carbide paper, cleaned with distilled water in an ultrasonic cleaner and dried with oil-free air. Each slice was embedded in an acrylic block for easier handling during surface treatment and fixation during the micro shear test.
Fifteen slices of each material were assigned to 3 groups (5 each) according to surface treatment. The first group was etched with hydrofluoric acid 9%, the second group was sandblasted with Al2O3 100 μm and the third group received both treatments sandblasting and etching. All slices were then silanated with silane coupling agent.
Three transparent microtubules (diameter 0.9mm and height 2mm) were bonded to the treated surface of each slice acting as molds for the resin cement. After application of the cement and curing, the transparent microtubules

were sectioned and removed to expose the samples (resin cement micro-cylinder) using sharp scalpel blade number11.
A total of one hundred thirty five samples were loaded under shear in a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 1mm/min until failure. The recorded data were collected and statistically analyzed. Two-way Anova was used to assess effect of treatment and material on micro-shear bond strength followed by pairwise comparison with Bonferroni correction.
The results revealed that there was a significant effect of material and significant effect of treatment over micro shear bond strength. Etching showed higher bond values than other treatments. IPS e.max CAD showed higher bond values than other materials. Generally the interaction between treatments and materials were statistically significant excluding Lava Ultimate.
