Abstract

SUMMARY

The present study was carried out in 1994 and 1995 seasons at Faculty of Agriculture, Kafr El-Sheikh, Tanta University. The study aimed to evaluate one year old plants from five grape varieties to their drought resistance. Drought conditions tested in this study was created through subjecting the experimental plants from each variety to 5 watering intervals at 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 days during the period from May to September in the two seasons. These watering treatments maintained over about 69.27, 61.95, 57.01, 53.72 and 50.28 soil moisture contents as percentages of field capacity. The study was planed in split plot design using 5 replicates per treatment. The evaluation to drought resistance in this study depends on three directions which are associated with each other and with plant response to drought conditions.
• The first was related to water changes in the plant tissues, by
determining water fractions, free, bound and total water contents, in addition to osmotic pressure and water holding capacity. The second, was related to some physiological changes, by detennining some organic substances in the plant tissues, such as chlorophyll, proline atnio acid, total soluble sugars as reducing and non-reducing ones, in addition to the concentration of NPK in leaves petioles, shoots and roots of grape plants. The third was conducted with plant growth behaviour under drought conditions, by measuring some vegetative and root growth parameters. The obtained results could be smrunm•ized as follows:
