VALUE OF CARDIAC REHABILITATION PROGRAM FOR PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC HEART FAILURE ASSESSED BY QUALITY OF LIFE QUESTIONNAIRE AND 6 MINUTE WALK TEST

Abstract
T
he present study was done to To measure the magnitude of benefit of cardiac rehabilitation program in patients with stable heart failure in terms of quality of life questionnaire and 6 minutes walk test.
All patients had full history and thorough physical examination. BMI and waist circumference, HbA1c, lipid profile (total cholesterol, TG, HDL and LDL), 12 lead surface ECG and echocardiography, all of which were done before and after recruitment in a 3 months rehabilitation program.
The improvement in functional capacity was evaluated by 6MWT.and the improvement in the health related quality of life was measured by MLHFQ.
The MLHFQ and the 6MWT were done before and after recruitment in the rehabilitation program
In the present study not only a highly significant reduction in the blood pressure, heart rate, BMI, waist circumference and in the smokers number.
However, there was no statistically significant reduction in LDL, Triglycerides and HbA1C. There was no statistically significant increase in HDL after the rehabilitation program.
There was also highly significant improvement in the functional capacity and the health related quality of life as evidenced by improvement in the NYHA class a, the 6MWD and the MLHFQ scores.
These findings were consistent with most of the previous studies in the same field except for failure of the rehabilitation program in this study to improve the lipid profile and HbA1C in a statistically significant manner.
So, the present study found that involvement of patients in cardiac rehabilitation program improves their cardiovascular risk factors, functional capacity and Health related quality of life through optimization of medical treatment, risk factor control, prescribed exercise training, physical activity and motivation and it should be implemented in routine management of these patients and supported by the government and health insurance institutes.
