SHEREEN MOHAMED SAIED ALY;

Abstract

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways that is usually associated with wide spread, but variable, reduction in airflow; these changes are often reversible, either spontaneously or following treatment.

Inhaled frusernide have been shown to prevent or reduce acute bronchconstriction due to a number of stimuli in the laboratory setting, so it was very important to verifY the effect of frusernide in the treatment of the acute attack of asthma in our study.

Fourty patients were subjected to our study, suffering from acute asthma, necessitating their admission to the critical care medical department. The patients were divided into four groups:

Group (1) were treated with inhaled B2- agonist alone, while those in Group (2) were treated as group (1) with the addition of frusernide, Group (3) received both B2- agonists and ipratropium bromide, while Group (4) were subjected to inhalation of B2- agonists + Atrovent +
frusernide + saline.

Pulmonary fimction tests were done to every patient on admission and

30 minutes after trial in the 4 groups. Any patients with renal and hepatic impairment or heart failure were excluded from the study.

Our data demonstrate that overall, frusemide does appear to add some benefit to the treatment of acute severe asthma. The absolute figures of
