ROLE OFMALE SEX HORMONES IN PROTECTION FROM IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME
ABDEL RAHMAN WAGEEH ABDEL AZEEM;
Abstract
rritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic disorder of unknown etiology characterized by exacerbations and remissions, which presents with symptoms of abdominal pain and discomfort, and alterations in bowel habits. Approximately two thirds of patients report abdominal pain as one of their symptoms, and abdominal pain is reported by 40% of patients when asked for their
most bothersome symptom.
IBS is more cmmnon in women and it is frequently assumed that being a female may predispose to the development of this disorder.
Alternatively, being male could offer some degree of protection and if so, this might be mediated by testosterone.
The aim of this study was to assess whether male patients with IBS have lower levels of testosterone and luteinizing honnones than their unaffected counterparts .
Twenty five male patients with IBS (mean age 39.12±
11.27 years) were compared with fifteen controls without IBS (mean age 42.9+14.51 Years). Each subject had serum testosterone and luteinizing hormones measured .
The only difference in the hormone levels between patients and controls that reached statistical significance was the lower value ofLH in IBS patients (P<0.001).
There was a tendency for IBS symptomatology to be inversely related to testosterone level (P
