Radiological Joint Involvement and Functional Disability as Outcome Measures in Rheumatoid Arthritis
Amal Mohamed Kamal ElShafie;
Abstract
The present study included 60 patients with rheumatoid arthritis according to ARA Revised criteria (1987). There were 12 male (20%) and 48 female (80%) ranging in age.from 20-65 year and a mean± SO of 40.45± 11.69 year.
All patients were subjected to history taking and thorough clinical examination. routine investigation for confirming the diagnosis included laboratory investi_g,ation
• (Erythrocyte Sedimentation rate, lg M rheumatoid factor). and radiological investigation (plain x-ray posteroanterior view for both hands and wrists).
The radiological joint damage assessed by modified Sharp Score (1985), and evaluatiory function disability was by Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ).
1;
The effect of age, sex, disease duration and drugs on the radiological joint damage and function disability and the correlation between both variables was determined.
There was positive significant correlation between functional disability and the radiological joint involvement assessed by modified Sharp Score. The correlation between the duration of rheumatoid arthritis in years and both functional disability and the radiological joint involvement was positive.
The age of patients was positively correlated with both variables. The functional disability was positively correlated with female sex. While there was no significant Correlation between radiological joint damage and sex.
The effect of drug use (methotrexate, chloroquine and oral cm1icosteroid) was not correlated with functional disability while methotrexate, chloroquine were associated
with less radiological joint damage.
