STUDIES ON PHYTOREMEDIATION OF HEAVY METALS POLLUTED SOIL

NESREEN FAROUK IBRAHIM ZEIN;

Abstract

Remediation of heavy metal polluted soils is necessary in order to reduce the risk of its accumulation in soil to an environmental acceptable level.

The use of plants to remove toxic metals from soils (phytoremediation) is emerging as a potential strategy for cost-effective and enviromnentally sound remediation of contaminated soils.

. Phytoremediation as a soil clean-up teclmology seeks to exploit the ability of metal-accumulating plants to extract metals from the soil with their roots and to concentrate these metals in above-ground plant parts. The metal-rich plant material can be safely harvest and removed from the site without extensive excayation, disposal costs, and loss of topsoil
associated with traditional remediation practices.
