Abstract

The study aimed at correlating serum levels of Creatine- Phosphokinase and Nucleated red blood cell (NRBC) count to the clinical severity of Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) using Samat clinical staging.

The study was conducted on term newborns, 30 infants with HlE [Stage I: 10, Stage II: ll, Stage III: 9]. Ten normal newborn infants were studi,s as control for comparison.

The study revealed the following:

There was no clinical or statistical difference between the HlE and the control infants as regards: gestational age, Bi1ih weight, gender, and mode of delivery or place of birth.

Mean Apgar score at I minute among the HlE infants was 3.5±2, compared to

8.4 ±l among the control, the difference was statistically significant P<. 0001,

97% of the HlE infants had Apgar less than 7 at one minute and 22% (6 infants) of them remained to be depressed at 5 minutes.
