Ballistic-Like Deposition of Particles on a Substrate as a Model for Surface Growth

Hassan Fathy Hassan Mohammad El-Nashar;

Abstract

In this work a ballistic model for surface growth is proposed for two kinds of interacting particles. The basic processes involved during growth have been captured into two models, namely, ballistic-like and random-like. The first presents a growth process of films growing on a cold substrate while the latter incorporates surface diffusion that might happen at high temperatures. Two aspects are studied exten sively for both models by means of Monte Carlo simulations in search of a better understanding of the growth phenomena: The first is the kinetics while the second is the morphologies which give a clear inter pretation for the latter.

For the first model, we studied the kinetics of growth in (1+1)
and (2+1)-dimensionswell as their corresponding morphologies.
The study• comprises with different probabilities and different sys tem sizes in both dimensions. Also 'in (2+1)-dimensions the inter action is extended to the next-nearest-neighbours for the first time even in the case of ballistic models for one kind of particles. We
found a phase transition in kinetics and morphologies; Pc = 0.28 and
Pc = 0.5 in (1+1)- and (2+1)-dimensions, respectively. This transi
tion is clear from the non monotonic behaviour of the saturated sur
face width W(t = oo) scaled with the probability P. Also the growth
