Abstract

S.N.G. is a very common endocrine disorder which the surgeon might be confronted with. If one limits the incidence of simple goiter to those cases in which a patient presents with a clinically evident lump in the neck, then the incidence is somewhere around 2 - 4% of the population in north Europe developed countries (Vander, etal. 1986 ). Most of this cases well need surgical interferance wither complicated or not. So, the study of postoperative complications is extreemly important.

In our study all cases were examind clinicaly and throughly investigated. The investigations which are available as thyroid function tests can exclude toxicity. U/S can differentiate cystic from solid nodules and can help to differentiat bengin from malignant cyst together by the aid of FNA. U/S can aid to differentiate whether the case is solitary nodule of the thyroid or multinodular goitre and whether there is dominant nodule in the gland. Isotope scanning provides a functional image of the thyroid gland nodules. Increased function "hot nodule" are benign. Non functioning cold nodule has the possibility of malignancy but more commonly a benign especially with multiple nodules with no dominant nodules in the gland. Both U/S and isotope scanning are more sensitive than the clinical examination to detect whether the case is solitary nodule or multinodular goitre and whether unilateral or bilateral affection.
