RELATIONS BETWEEN MATERIAL FLOW, REQUIRED ENERGY AND PRODUCT QUALITY IN THE FLOW TURNING PROCESS

Abstract
Flow turning operation has many applications in industry and is used to form many materials and alloys. Several workers investigated the forces generated during the flow turning operation to obtain the consumed work. But when calculating the moment, tangential force component is only utilised.
Measuring the generated moment produced and axial force from the operation gives better results of work consumed. The measured moment results from both tangential and radial forces on the workpiece. Also the problem of plane offset between the rollers is eliminated if moment measurement is used.
In this work, the relations between material flow, required energy and product quality in the flow turning process are investigated.
Flow turning of many alloys have been carried out using different working angles, feeds, thickness reductions, diameter of mandrels, diameter of rollers, constant nose radius, constant initial thickness and constant nose radius of mandrel on CNC flow turning machine. Moment was measured by a dynamometer attached to the flow turning set-up.
Flow turning moment I displacement diagram consisted of four stages. As
feed and thickness reduction increase, produced moment increased, while as working angle increased, produced moment decreased. As displaced volume, nominal strain and incremental strain increased, produced moment proved to be increased.
A limiting flow turning curve was constructed for the different aluminium alloys between the stress ratio (C;lo'J, and the feed. Sound region was found, and bulging, radial crack and tearing region were detected for
