Correlation between Fecal Calprotectin level as non-invasive biomarker and Severity of endoscopic grading of Ulcerative Colitis using UC endoscopic Index

Abstract

Fecal bio-markers provide a non-invasive diagnostic tool for identification of patients with UC. Fecal biomarkers are acute phase proteins produced by inflamed mucosa that can help to gain an objective measurement of disease activity as symptoms are often subjective and also help to avoid invasive procedures which are often a burden to the patient and the health care system.
Fecal Calprotectin assay is one of those fecal biomarkers that are characterized by its high sensitivity and specificity in identification of patients with ulcerative Colitis from healthy subjects. The aim of this study was to assess the fecal Calprotectin levels in patients with Ulcerative Colitis and to compare them with UCEIS level of severity of inflammation. So it's important to Measure Quantitative Fecal calprotectin.
This study was carried on 30 subjects with UC and showed that Quantitative Fecal Calprotectin levels correlates significantly (r = 0.755, p-value < 0.001) with disease severity in patients with UC where higher levels were found in patients with severe UC by UCEIS.
We formulated a new Simple Laboratory Severity Index which correlates with UCEIS r=0.812, based on simple and easily measured laboratory parameters (Fecal Calprotectin, Stool RBCs, Hb, CRP and
