Hyperuricemia as an Independent Risk and Prognostic Factor in Lupus Nephritis Patients

Mohammed Ali Reyad;

Abstract

Lupus nephritis (LN) is one of the most serious SLE complications since it is the major predictor of poor prognosis and up to 25% of these patients still develop end- stage renal disease (ESRD) 10 years after onset of renal compromise.
Early diagnosis and prompt treatment dramatically modify the course of renal disease and improve the long- term survival. Therefore, early detection and diagnosis of lupus nephritis (LN) appear to be of great importance

The aim of this study was to investigate the role of serum uric acid in development of lupus nephritis in SLE patients which could be used as an early detector of LN.
We conducted the study on 120 subjects recruited from immunology clinic at Ain Shams University Hospital, Subjects were divided into three groups of 40 each; SLE with LN patient group, SLE without LN patient group & healthy individuals (control group).
All Patients were subjected to full history, clinical examination, some investigations besides measurement of serum uric acid level.
