IMMUNOHISTOCHEMICAL STUDY OF LARYNGEAL EPITHELIAL LESIONS

Eman Ahmed Mohammad Mahmoud Abda;

Abstract

This study was an attempt to throw some light on the role of some tumor markers in the pathogenesis of benign and malignant epithelial lesions of the larynx.

The expression of p53 protein as well as the distribution of basement membrane components; type IV collagen (elY) and laminin were studied immunohistochemically Ill 96 laryngeal epithelial specimens. These specimens were endoscopic obtained by punch at the E.N.T. Department, Assiut University Hospital. The specimens comprised 23 laryngeal polyps, 2 squamous cell papillomas, 12 low grade dysplasias, 5 high grade dysplasias/carcinoma in situ and 54 invasive squamous cell carcinomas of the larynx.

Fonnalin-fixed, paraffin embedded tissue sections were immunostained by monoclonal antibodies against p53, elY and laminin using the Avidin-Biotin peroxidase complex method. The results were correlated with the clinicopathological parameters.

p53:

It was noticed that benign laryngeal lesions were always negative for p53 staining, whereas, p53 overexpression has been identified in a high proportion of squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx (72.2%).
