Image•Processing and Automatic Classification Technlques for Noisy Fingerprint Images

Abstract

For over a century and till now, fingerprints have been considered as a reliable

and safe measure for personal identification. Fingerprints possess many attractive characteristics that place them on the top of other identification measures. They are unique for each person and thus they are considered as natural coding system, moreover, fingerprints are immutable, universal and easily collectable. The enormous increase in population as well as the increasing needs for fast identification tools in different areas such as national security, business and research areas, dictate the use of "Automatic Fingerprint Identification Systems" (AFIS). These systems which are based on computer technology are meant to be able of storing and handling huge fingerprint databases, by performing different processes such as identification, verification and classification of fingerprint images.
