INFLUENCE OF AGING ON THE RESPIRATORY TRACT OF RATS: "A HISTOLOGICAL AND HISTOCHEMICAL STUDY"

Sohair Abd El-Bakey Mohamed Eltoney;

Abstract

In this work, the respiratory tract of middle and aged female albino rats have been investigated and compared with that of the mature age group in a trial to detect any histological&orhistochemial changes in the respiratory tract as a result of aging.

The animals were divided according to their ages into 3 groups (12 each) The first group represented the mature age group (3 & 6 months old). The second group represented the middle age group (9 &12 months old) The third group represented the old age group (18 & 24 months old).

The animals were anaesthetized by ether and specimens from the different parts of the respiratory system including the nasal cavity, larynx, trachea and lung were dissected out and prepared for histological and histochemical examination.

Histological study of the respiratory tract of the aging rat revealed some histological features that were different from those detected in the mature age group.

•Presence of squamous metaplasia in the upper part of the respiratory tract was common in the aging rats. In the nasal cavity respiratory metaplasia was commonly found in the posterior part which is normally lined by an olfactory epithelium in the mature age group.
