Tamer Abd El-Hafez lbrahim El-Bakary;

Abstract

Breast cancer is the most common site-specific cancer in women & is the leading cause of death from cancer for females 40 to
44 years of age. Locally advanced breast cancer represents 40 to

60% of the newly diagnosed cases in the developing countries. Multi-modality treatment has proved to be effective & became the standard of care for patients with locally advanced breast cancer.
The present prospective study included 46 females with 47 primary locally advanced breast cancer admitted into the Oncology Unit, General Surgery Department, & Clinical Oncology Department, Tanta University Hospital between May 2002 & August 2004. The patients were divided into 3 groups according to the received treatment
modality:
Group A: included 14 patients who were submitted to modified radical mastectomy as the first line of treatment because they did not fulfil the requirements of breast conservation surgery.

Group Bl: included 14 patients who received 3 cycles of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (10 patients received FAC regimen & 4 patients received TAC regimen). The tumours in these patients were downstaged to the extent that they became eligible to breast conservation surgery. So, they were submitted to qudrantectomy &
axillary clearance.
