Amal Riyadh Abdei-Raheem Kitishat;
Abstract
Realizing the world- wide acknowledgement of the Irish theatre as a significant
/fJ theatrical phenomenon, the Irish Dramatic Movement owes this honour to the
founders of the Irish theatre: Lady Gregory, W. B. Yeats and Edward Martin. This thesis aims at exploring Yeats' efforts in the establishment of the Irish theatre. Also, it is intended to shed light on Yeats' mainly as a dramatist with regard to his sense of nationalism and searching for an Irish identity.
Then, the study is intended to explore Yeats' cultural efforts in his search for an identity by using the medium of drama as away of revealing the main reasons that undermine the establishment of a national as well as cultural identity. Taking into considerations the cultural and political circumstances in which Yeats lived, Yeats as an Anglo- Irish writer tried to identifY himself as different from the "English" since he regards them as colonizers and hence he invokes the Irish people to be proud of their culture.
Being an Anglo-Irish dramatist, Yeats was attacked of his nationalism. Living during a time of revolutionary fervent political disorder, it was expected from Yeats since he was widely famous to use his literary skills to advocate the political propaganda. However Yeats refused to see literature as a tool in the hands of politicians and insisted on the freedom of writers to present their opinion away from any pressure. Evenmore, he highlights literature in general and drama in particular as a superior form of an aesthetic beauty that has nothing to do with the political disorder.
Unable t_o understand Yeats' aesthetic perspective, nationalists accused him of snobbery and "elietism". They attributed this charge to his Anglo- Irish origins. Nevertheless, Yeats never responds to their pressures and insists on his philosophy. It is in this light, the thesis is intended to shed light on Yeats' national beliefs, his reaction to the major national events is going to be examined to see how far this charge was misleading and unfair to W.B. Yeats' achievements. Also, the study is intended to examine Yeats,s interaction with the cultural, political and social trends of his time. A detailed critical analysis of Yeats, sense of nationalism and his search for an identity will be explored to see how they are manifested in his plays.
