ASSESSMENT OF THE DIAGNOSTIC POTENTIAL OF OFFICE MINI-HYSTEROSCOPY IN GYNECOLOGICAL DIAGNOSIS
AHMED MAHMOUD SHAWKY SHETA;
Abstract
Hysteroscopy is an important means of diagnosing intrauterine pathologic 4isorders in patients with variolis gynecologic complaints. In addition, the presence of intrauterine pathologic disorders can be verified and diagnosed, perhaps with greater accuracy, by means of direct intrauterine visualization. Although physicians are limited to blind endometrial curettage or various imaging techniques, it is possible now to thoroughly evaluate the intrauterine environment with the hysteroscope which provides immediate results with minimal morbidity and inconvenience to the patient.
This study was designed to evaluate the feasibility of office mini hysteroscopy for gynecological diagnosis, comparing its diagnostic potential with that of transvaginal ultrasonography, and endometrial sampling. Final diagnosis was attained by histopathology, either after dilatation and curettage (D&C) or after hysterectomy, if indicated. As well, by operative hysteroscopy or hysteroscopic-guided biopsy and by diagnostic laparoscopy.
This study was conducted on 150 patients who have been selected from the outpatient clinic and inpatient wards of Shatby University Hospital. These patients were complaining of either abnormal uterine bleeding; primary infertility, secondary infertility, habitual abortion, missed intra-uterine device, hypomenorrhea, oligomenorrhea, secondary amenorrhea, and polymenorrhea.
