Abstract

Tow field experiments were carried out during the summer seasons of 200land 2002 at the Experimental Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, Shebin El-Kom, Minufiya University, to study the effect of irrigation systems and water regimes, along with their interactions on growth, relative water content, chemical composition, chemical and quality in tubers, yield and its components and water use efficiency of potato plants. The design of this experiment was split plot design with four replicates.

1. Four irrigation systems were used, i.e., subsurface trickle, drip, sprinkler and furrow irrigation systems.
2. Four water regimes were applied where the plants were irrigated by 125, 100, 75 and 50 % of the evapotranspiration (ET).
3. The interactions effect between both irrigation systems and water regimes were studied also.

The seed tubers of Diamant cv. were imported from abroad (Holland) . A complete potato whole seed tubers were planted in Jan. 29111 and 27'11 for 2001 and 2002 seasons, respectively .

The average weight of the seed tubers ranged from 40-50 gm/tu ber.

* The results of this experiment can be summarized as follows:

1- Growth characters :

In general, growth characteristics of potato plants, expressed as plant height, total plant dry weight, relative growth rate and net assimilation rate were enhanced by subsurface trickle Imgation system. Sprinkler irrigation system caused a significant increase in the number of leaves per plant, as well as, leaves area and leaf area index compared to the other irrigation
