PHYSIOLOGICAL AND BIOCHEMICAL STUDIES OF EFFECTS OF ETHYL ALCOHOL ON LIVER AND TESTES OF THE GROWING RAT

Adel Gaber Mohamed Shalan;

Abstract

The present work deals with the effects of chronic alcohol consumption on some physiological and biochemical parameters which are indicatives of growth, liver state and functions as well as testicular changes induced in response to alcohol intoxication in the growing albino rat as an animal model for such studies that actually deserve great interest at scientific, medical as well as social levels.

This dissertation is composed of 5 chapters in addition to General Introduction, Aim of the work, Materials and Methods, References and Arabic Summary. •

The first chapter is concerned with influence of chronic alcohol consumption on body and liver weight, hepatic protein content and serum albumin and total protein contents in growing rats.

Animals chronically intoxicated with ethanol showed small but significant decrease in their body weight when compared with their respective controls. In contrast, weight of livers of ethanolic rats were found to be larger than those excised from normal control animals. With respect to hepatic total protein content, this parameter was significantly elevated in response to alcohol influence. Conversely, serum albumin and total proteins exhibited significant decreases due to chronic impact of ethanol.

Chapter 2, deals with the chronic effects of alcohol on hepatic and serum enzyme profile with special reference to gamma glutamyltransferase (GGT).
