Amira Adnan Serry;

Abstract

Background and objective: Rosacea is an inflammatory skin disease with a chronic course. This study aimed to investigate the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in rosacea patients.
Materials and methods: This study included 50 rosacea cases and 50 healthy controls, selected from Dermatology outpatient clinic of Ain-Shams University Hospitals.All the subjects underwent waist circumference, blood pressure measurement, Fasting blood sugar test, complete lipid profile, CRP titre were done, and diagnosis of metabolic syndrome was made according to the ATP III criteria.
Results: Statistical analysis of cardiovascular risk factors revealed that there was no statistical significant difference between cases and controls as regard waist circumference and blood pressure, Laboratory results revealed that there were significant differences in the levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, LDL, FBS. By applying ATP III criteria for diagnosing metabolic syndrome, our results revealed that there is a highly statistically significant difference in incidence of metabolic syndrome in cases compared to controls.
Conclusion: Rosacea patients may have a high risk of CVD. As such, we recommend close follow-up of rosacea patients because of the increased risk of CVD. The mechanism underlying this increased risk is unknown, and additional randomized and controlled studies are required for clarification.
