SOLAR COOKERS AND STILLS FOR SINAI PENINSULA REMOTE AREAS

Hosny Ibrahim Sabry;

Abstract

The Current Egyptian development plans are directing a keen interest for the development of Upper Egypt and the remote desert areas. Sinai is one of the most important and promising desert areas for development, particularly with its rich tourist attractions and facilities. •Apart from the touristic area, the population of Sinai are mostly living in small scattered remote communities of herders or small farmers. The development of such communities is still faced by the acute shortage of energy and water supplies.

The supply of energy or water to satisfy the living and development needs of remote scattered communities in Sinai can be made available through distribution networks from the nearby main cities (if the production facility exist) or through using on site available resources or generating units.

The first option needs high investements and should be implemented within the national plans for energy and water supplies, as well it may be subject to frequent shortage and difficulties in transportations. It represent a burden on the national economy and can not be implemented simultanously in all or most of the communitie
•it may be plannned and implemented sequentially through a number of national
development plans.

The second option of on site supplies can be implemented traditionally by using primitive ovens, cookers. lighting facilities or using diesel electricity generating units as well it might be satisfied using new simple technological solutions of renewable energy such as Solar, wind or biomass.
