EARLY PRODUCTION OF GARLIC AS INFLUENCED BY SOME CULTURAL TREATMENTS

Abstract

A set of experiments was co nducted during 199411995 and

1995/1 996 seaso ns at th e Facul ty of Agriculture , Ain Shams Uni versity to study the effect of cooling , grow th reg ulators and planting dates on the early prod uc tion of Egyptian , Omani a'Jd Chinese culti vars . In the f irst seaso n , res ults showed that stori ng ga rlic bulbs a t lOOC for 3 months resulted in early field emergence \n\ but the percent of sta nd was gradually reduced in the Egypti an and Omani treatments . Plant length , num ber of leaves per plant , l:)_ Ff a nd bulb diam e ters , fresh a nd dry wei ghts a nd y i eld were decreased by holding the bulbs for 3 months a t lOOC before pla ntin-g

Trea ting seed cloves with GA3 , Dormex and tap water did not \\n·\· affect the studied parameters .

in GA3 , thidi azuron a nd tap water for 24 hrs then storing them at

15°C were effect i ve in brea king dormancy in ga rli c . Fi eld stan' grad ually decreased as a res ult of very ea rly prod uction , i.e. during November , but the obta ined b ul bs were ve r y small with '\ d
