Ghrelin Hormone in Relation to Colorectal Carcinoma

Montaser Abdalla Mohamed;

Abstract

SUMMARY
C
olorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most frequently diagnosed cancer in both men and women and the second leading cause of cancer death after lung cancer. CRC is curable if diagnosed at an early stage. Screening for CRC lowers both the mortality and the incidence of the disease and is widely recommended for people over 50’s.
The role of ghrelin in cancer cells has been investigated in multiple experiments in vitro, however the results are confusing. Some investigators have shown ghrelin as antiproliferative factor, but the others have found it as a tumor development promoting factor which stimulates cancer cell proliferation. Probably the effect of ghrelin depends on its concentration and cell type.
The aim of the study was to identify and clarify the relation between serum Ghrelin hormone and colorectal cancer patients as a marker of diagnosis.
This study was conducted on 30 patients with colorectal carcinoma diagnosed by histopathology of colonoscopic biopsy, included as Group (I).
Another 20 healthy volunteers were included as control group (II). They are healthy adult free from cancer colon by colonoscopy.
The controls group (II) are matching group (I) patients as regard age, sex and BMI.
The current study assessed whether plasma ghrelin concentrations differ in colo-rectal cancer patients in comparison with health control group irrespective of tumor location or differentiation.
