Effect of Training Program on Nurses' performance for Caring of Patients with Traumatic Brain Injury

Abstract

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) have a major health and socioeconomic problem worldwide for the high rate of death and long-term disability. It can be a catastrophic injury that changes patients' life completely. Aim: This study aimed to assess the effect of training program on nurses' performance for caring of patients with TBI. Subject and methods: A convenience sample including all available nurses (No=35) in Neurosurgical ICU at El-Demerdash hospital/Ain Shams University. Tools used for data collection were two designed tools; 1) an Arabic self administrated questionnaire sheet, 2) Nurses' practice observational checklist. Results: the present study revealed that, most of the nurses had got unsatisfactory level of performance (knowledge& practice) regarding caring of patients with TBI pre the program implementation (77% and 80% respectively). Meanwhile the majority of the study sample had got statistically significant improvement in their knowledge and practice regarding caring of patients with TBI post program implementation (94% and 86% respectively). While this improvement lowered slightly post 3 months at follow up (77% and 67% respectively). Conclusion: based on the study findings, Inadequacy of the nurse' performance regarding caring of patients with TBI pre the program implementation. Meanwhile the majority of the study sample had got statistically significant improvement post the program implementation, while this improvement lowered slightly post 3 months at follow up. Recommendation: the importance of establishing booklet guideline for neurointensive nurses for caring of patients with TBI based on evidence based practice.
