Abstract

During the past few years, enormous progress has been made in the field of endoscopic surgery, not only in gynecology but also in many
other surgical disciplines. Laparoscopic procedure have been developed
.
and described for treating most types of ovarian pathology, ranging from treatment of some developmental anomalies such as excision of ovarian streaks to extirpation or low grade ovarian malignancies.

Discussion of the role of laparoscopy in gynecologic oncology is very important to all gynecologists and surgeon who use or wish to use this modality. Indications and diseases may vary, but technique and an efTort to reduce complications are basic consideration to all operative laparoscopists, who must be fluent in the language of safety before an evaluation of indications can be under taken. Of all the gynecological cancer, ovarian malignancies represent the greatest clinical challenge. Carcinoma of the ovary is a frightening disease because it is a major cause of death fi•om cancer in women. It is the leading cause of death from gynecologic malignancies. The disease is hidden with a common clinical problem: persistent adnexal masses, a mostly benign condition. Although laparotomy is touted to be the standard of care of such problem, the advent of modern laparoscopy requires a rethinking of appropriate surgical approach to aci'nexal masses. The appropriate management of adnexal masses is one of the most controversial problems facing gynecologist today. Whether laparotomy or laparoscopy is used, malignant masses are often mismanaged.
