SURGICAL VERSUS ENDOUROLOGICAL MANAGEMENT OF URETEROPELVIC JUNCTION OBSTRUCTION A comparative study

Abstract

The definition of urinary tract obstruction is a difficult task. However, the most acceptable definition is any impedance to the flow of urine that resulted in deterioration of renal functions on the short or long run. It is assumed that ureteropelvic junction obstruction is the commonest cause
for upper urinary tract obstruction. It is a fairly common pathology,. that varies widely in its genesis and anatomy.

Although, there was great enthusiasm for endopyelotomy in the past decade that its indications has widened to include almost all cases of PUJO, there is still much debate about whether the outcome following antegrade endopyelotomy can match that after open pyeloplasty. Reviewing the literature revealed only few retrospective studies that compare between endoscopic and open surgical approaches for treatment ofPUJO. So, this study was designed to prospectively compare between the endourological procedures and the standard open surgery for the correction of PUJO on 28 patients (classified into 2 groups); one group treated by Anderson Hynes dismembered pyeloplasty (14 patients) and the other group treated by antegrade percutaneous endopyelotomy .
