GENETIC VARIATION OF CERTAIN GENES RELATED TO GROWTH TRAITS IN SOME GOAT BREEDS RAISED IN EGYPT
Mohamed Abdelfattah Mohamed Abdelhafez;
Abstract
Goats are reported to be the first domestic animals that were
used for food production (Gentry et al., 2004) and they are also
widely used for other products such as wool, hair and skin. They
were both domesticated approximately 8000–11,000 years ago.
There are currently more than 500 breeds of goats (Scherf, 2000).
Goats are members of the Caprinae subfamily of the family
Bovidae, which includes cattle, sheep and goat (Kris, 2008). The
world goat population is about 550 million, from which 94% is
found in the Mediterranean, Asia and Africa. Furthermore, in
many European countries such as Italy and Hungary.
In Egypt, goats are an important source of meat and milk. They
are distributed across the country, especially dense in the Nile
valley and delta and with lower concentration in the north-western
coastal region and at oases (Galal et al., 2005). In the Nile valley,
goats are usually found in small holdings as mixed flocks with
