BEHAVIOR OF RAFT ON FULL AND PARTIAL DISPLACEMENT PILES

MOHAMED HASSANIEN RABIE;

Abstract

The piled •raft fmmdations are now widely used in many Leas of the
I
world. The main advantages of such a foundation type are: I
I
a) Reduction in maximum and differential settlements of thd. designe•d

foundation and eventually of the movements of existink close-by foundations. i\
b) Reduction in foundation tilting either due to load eccentricity, or due to
I

irregularities of strata thicknesses or due to variations of the prperties of the involved soils. I

c) Prevention of settlement joints between differently loaded pahs of the
I
building.

d) Increase In the global bearing capacity of the foundation. \

e) Increase in the foundation resistance against horizontal loading and
I
overturning moments. I
I
f) Reduction in the likelihood of damage to structural components and

sensitive architectural finishes due to the increase of initial conshlidation
I
settlement of elements. I
I
g) Decrease in internal raft stresses and moments by choosing optirhal pile
. . I
pos1t1on.
