MANAGEMENT OF BREAST CANCER ACCORDING TO BIOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION

Abstract
SUMMARY
T
he future of treatment of breast cancer based on the biological classification is for the targeted (biological) therapy. Is it true?
Cancer is one of the most common causes of death, taking nearly 7 million lives each year worldwide. New cancer targeted therapies that make use therapeutic antibodies or small molecules have made treatment more tumor specific and less toxic. Nevertheless, there remain several challenges to the treatment of cancer, including drug resistance, cancer stem cells, and high tumor interstitial fluid pressure. In many solid tumors, for example, increased interstitial fluid pressure makes the uptake of therapeutic agents less efficient. One of the most promising ways of meeting such challenges is ligand-targeted therapy that may be used to make targeting more specific and carry higher of anti-cancer drug to tumor tissue (Ozawa et al., 2014).
Targeted therapy is a type of medication that blocks the growth of cancer cells by interfering with specific targeted molecules needed for carcinogenesis and tumor growth, rather than by simply interfering with rapidly dividing cells (e.g. with traditional chemotherapy). Targeted cancer therapies may be more effective than current treatments and less harmful to normal cells. Many oncologists believe that targeted therapies are the chemotherapy of the future (Holderegger et al., 2013).
The next future will bring newer targeted therapy for breast cancer and there will be decline in the use of chemotherapy. Special drugs will be developed to attack special targets that exist only in breast cancer cells. That will reduce side effects and will be safer. These drugs will be part of our language every day (Narod et al., 2012).
Conclusively, biological therapies are newer drugs that work differently from chemotherapy drugs. There different types of biological therapies, which work in slightly different ways. They can be used alone in combination with chemotherapy or hormonal therapy.
