Assessment of Pediatric Nursing Students’ Knowledge and Practice in Technical Nursing Institutes Regarding Nursing Informatics

Abstract
Background: Nursing informatics in pediatric nursing field is increasingly becoming an integral part from spiritual of nursing education. The nursing education should prepare students to coping with advancement in nursing informatics and improved their knowledge and practice regarding nursing informatics. Aim of the Study: This study aimed to assess pediatric nursing students’ knowledge and practices regarding nursing informatics. Design: A descriptive study. Subjects: this study was conducted on (334) nursing students. Setting: four Technical Institutes of Nursing: El Demerdash Technical Institutes of Nursing affiliated to Ain Shams University and three Technical Institutes of Nursing, Al Zharaa, Al Hussein, Bab Al Sharia affiliated to Al Azhar University. Tools: Data was collected by using two tools, first: Self-administered questionnaire sheets composed of two parts: part1, student’s demographic data, part2, students’ knowledge regarding nursing informatics and second tool: Observational checklist to assess nursing informatics skills of the nursing students. Results: The finding of the present study revealed that the majority of nursing students in the four institutes had satisfactory total knowledge score and practice regarding nursing informatics, in addition to there was statistically significant differences (p<0.05) association between nursing informatics course and students’ basic computer skills and clinical information management, there was statistically significant (p<0.05) associated between students’ age and their educational level and nursing informatics course. Conclusion: Pediatric nursing students had satisfactory knowledge and good practice regarding nursing informatics. Also, there were statistically significant differences between student nurses’ knowledge and practice. In addition, lack of internet connectivity was the most common hindering factors for nursing informatics. Recommendations: In all the institutions of nursing the hospital based or university base must ensure an implemented curriculum of nursing informatics. Educational institutions must accept this challenge and prepare nurses’ students for a lifetime of reskilling, redirection, and reorganization.
