BREEDING OF SOME CUCUMBER (CUCUMIS SATIVUS L.) INBRED LINES FOR NEMATODE RESISTANCE

Abstract

Root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) are one of the most
destructive pathogens of vegetables. This study was conducted during the
period from 2011- 2013. In the present study, 14 different Inbred lines of
cucumber (C. sativus L.) in addition to Beit alpha variety were tested for
their response to M. incognita by inoculating with the second stage
juveniles (J2s) of nematode. All cultivars behaved differently regarding
formation of galls Females number and egg masses. Results revealed that
none of the tested cultivars was immune or highly resistant, There were
significant differences in inbred lines for M. incognita resistance, inbred
number 7 gave the highest number of galls, females, egg masses and
number (J2s) in the soil which considered a Moderately susceptible (MS)
followed by cultivar Beta alpha, while inbred number 4 and 5 gave the
lowest number of galls, females, egg masses which considered a resistant
(R). Regarding to the horticulture parameters the obtained results
indicated that all inbred lines had superiority on the commercial variety
Beit alpha (control) in the main stem length. The inbred (11) gave the
highest value of plant length. Concerning, the total yield showed that,
inbred (8) gave the highest value of early and total yield (g/ plant)
whereas inbred(11) gave the lowest value of early and total yield (g/
plant). Quantitative genetic parameters obtained of number of galls, the
negative potence ratio (p) with vale (-0.38), the heterosis values for mid
and high parent were -25 % and -55 % respectively, the gall number was
found to be controlled by one pair of genes and Quantitative genetic
parameters obtained of total yield The positive value of potence ratio (p)
(1.3) indicated the over dominance for total yield character over the midparent
and high parent The heterosis values for mid and high parent were
57.8 % and 10.6 % respectively, Data showed also that, total yield was
controlled by one pair of genes, The estimates of Values of Broad and
narrow sense heritability were in high values 90.0 % 36.4 % respectively.
