Geophysical studies on the groundwater, occurrence in Wadi Gharandal and its tributaries, Southwest Sinai, Egypt
Ayman Mohamed Mahmoud Al Temamy;
Abstract
The present thesis is an attempt to apply integrated geomorphologiciil and geophysical studies in Wadi Gharandal and its tributaries, Southwest Sinai, Egypt with the purpose of evaluating the groundwater potentialities for future development in such area and assessing the most suitable sites• for construction of dams to recharge the water bearing fonnations with flood water.
The area of study lies between latitudes 29°11 • and
29°25'N and longitudes 32°52'20" and 33°27'20" E
covering an area of about 868 km 2 .
The geomorphologic studies were carried out with the . " purpose of locating the most suitable sites for construction of•
n
. dams according to the geomorphic analysis. These studies
1
;revealed that, the constructions Of dams are recommended at 3
.
. sites along the middle and the upper parts of the downstream
1 'portions of the main channel of Wadi Gharandal and other three sites along the channels of AI Salfa, AI Ghelan, and Wata tributaries.
The geoelectrical resistivity studies have been accomplished by carrying out 47 Vertical Electrical Sounding
• (V.E.S). The Schlumberger 4-electrode array was applied with
: • maximum current electrode half spacing (AB/2) of 2000 m. The geoelectrical succession derived from the quantitative interpretation with the help of the available data of two drilled wells, revealed that, the geoelectrical succession in the area consists of 11 geoelectrical units ("A", "B", ..., and "K") ranging in age from Quaternary to Lower Cretaceous. Ten of these geoelectrical layers are water bearing fonnations. These from top downwards are: "A2" (wadi fill deposits), "Cz" (sand
