A STUDY ON CASTING/ROLLING TECHNIQUE FOR PRODUCING METAL MATRIX COMPOSITE STRIPS

Ahmed Mohammed Moneeb EI"Sabbagh;

Abstract

Applications of metal matrix composites show a promising growth in the past decade. In tum, heavy research is directed towards composites fabrication technology. Manufacturing of composite sheets and strips with superior mechanical properties and low costs is an attractive topic. This thesis aims to study the effect of hot rolling on the properties of particulate metal matrix composites strips.

An extensive survey is illustrated in chapter (I). It includes the fabrication techniques of metal matrix composites with a special consideration to the liquid stirring method. It also considers fabrication methods of composite strips, their microstructure and mechanical properties.

As indicated in chapter (2), the study investigates various systems of particulate metal matrix composites. Different matrices (wrought and cast At-alloys) have been chosen namely; Al6063, Al6061, commercial pure Aluminium 99.9%, AI 2.8%Si 2%Mg and Al4.5%Cu. On the other hand; different reinforcement particles have been used: silicon carbide (194, 152,
130, 104, 86.3, 51 and 8 -tm) and alumina (30 -tm). Volume fraction ranges from 5% to 15%. Incremental hot rolling with reductions of 50%,
85% and 96% in average with intermediate heating to 550°C. Post heat
treatment course is designed to study the effect of age hardening.

Chapter (3) considers the properties of as-cast specimens. For the preparation of composites, stirring method in the semi-solid zone was applied. In the as-cast conditions, microscopic features (particulate uniformity, porosity, chemical reaction and interface quality between particulate and matrix) have been studied qualitatively and quantitatively.
