Abstract

Naturally occurnng coumarins such as psoralen, xanthotoxin and bergapten have been used many years in medicine in the treatment of vitiligo, psoriasis and other dei:mal diseases. Currently the only commercial source is plant materials.
Ammi majus L. is considered as one of the most important

sources of coumarins, it is also regarded as one of the most important medicinal plants grown in Egypt.

The aim of the present investigation was:

A-Quantitative determination of coumarins of Ammi majus L. crude frnits and fruit residue, e.g., bergapten, imperatorin, isopimpinellin, marmesin, xanthotoxin, and xanthotoxol.
B- Production of the most important coumanns (bergapten marmesin and xanthotoxin) by fungi from extraction residues of Ammi majus L. fruits as follows:
!-Cultivation of local and introduced fungi on Ammi majus L. fruit residue.
2-Selection of the most potent orgamsms that favors bergapten marrnesin, xanthotoxin production.
3-Physiological studies to determine the optimum conditions suitable for the biologically active coumarins production.
4-Semi-pilot studies for the economic cmm1arins production.
