Emad Abdou Sabaha Abdou;

Abstract

Chronic gastrointestinal symptoms are common in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Irritable bowel syndrome is a symptom-based diagnosis characterized by chronic abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating, and alteration of bowel habits.
Rome II questionnaire is used to compare the prevalence of gastrointestinal symptoms between patients with ESRD and outpatients without renal failure.
In both the general population and in patients with renal failure, gastrointestinal symptoms can markedly affect quality of life and psychological well-being. Cognitive function is measured by the kidney disease Quality of life-cognitive function (KDQOL-CF) score.
This study was conducted to evaluate prevalence of symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome in hemodialysis patients and their clinical characteristics.
To fulfill the aim of This study was conducted 100 patients, dialyzed 3 times a week for 3 to 4 hours at least one year before ,and will be carried out at Nephrology unit and Internal Medicine Department in Ain Shams University Hospitals
All patients of the three groups will be subjected to the following:-
• Full physical examination including abdominal examination.
• Laboratory investigations will include:-
- Complete blood count (CBC).
- Serum potassium level (K).
- Renal function tests (blood urea and serum creatinine level).
- Fasting blood sugar.
• ROME II Criteria Questionnaire.
• KDQOL-CF Score.
In this study, 67 male patients (67 %) and 33 female patients (33%) with no statistical difference between sex in IBS symptoms in haemodialysis patients.
This study shows that there is statistical significant difference between age groups and ROME II Modular criteria, as P. value is 0.02.
This study shows that there is no statistical significant difference between sex (female and male) or age and KDQOL-CF score, as P value is 0.86 and 0.77 respectively.
In this study results shows that there is statistical significant difference between duration of years of haemodialysis and KDQOL-CF score and no statistical significant difference between duration of years of haemodialysis and ROME II Modular criteria.
Also, in this study there is significant negative correlation between ROME II Modular criteria of IBS and KDQOL-CF with a P. value 0.013 in diagnosing IBS in Haemodialysis patients.
