Epidemiological Study of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in an Egyptian Sample

Abstract
The prevalence and comorbidity of ADHD among
3880 children aged 5 to II years in some kindergarten and primary schools in Cairo are determined by screening based on (observation and DuPaul ADHD Rating Scale) and confirmation by criteria ofDSM-IV. Criteria of conduct and oppositional disorders, scale of Middle Sex Hospital, and school • report are used to diagnose comorbidity of different disorders with ADHD.
Results: The prevalence of ADHD is 6.I% 8.0% among boys, 3.3% among girls). The ratio of boys to girls is 2.4:1. The highest distribution of ADHD was found among the lower social class (65.1%) in the private school found at class III and (84.3 %) at classes(IV & V) in the public school. (82.9%) of ADHD is found in the first child. (70.6%) of ADHD was found in the families having 6 members or more. The highest distribution of ADHD was found with children having non-university graduated fathers (74.5%) or mother (85.I%). (62.6%) of ADHD is found in children with IQ equal or less than 90. The highest disorder comorbid with ADHD is learning disorders which divided into: Arithmetic disorder (70.3%), Spelling disorder (74.1%), Reading disorder (62.7%). 21.3% of the total cases had no Learning Disorders.
(70.6%) of ADHD have enuresis. (49.4%) of Oppositional
defiant disorder. (34.9%) of ADHDADHD have conduct disorder. (26%) of ADHD have anxiety. and the lowest disorder comorbid with ADHD is depressive disorder (22.1%) ,and (11.5%) of ADHD have no comorbidity.
