Enas Mohamed Ebrahim Hassan;

Abstract

Blindness is a global public health problem. Thus, early development is delayed in all areas in blind children besides, far reaching psychosocial, educational and economic effects on the blind child, her/his family and the community.

It is estimated that there are 45 million blind individuals worldwide and another
135 million have severely impaired vision in both eyes. These figures are likely to double over the next 20 years unless decisive action is taken now.

On the other hand, blind children have the same needs for socialization, recreational activities and to be independent as regards to self care activities. So, they require additional training and encouragement to become independent, thus the school health nurse should be involved in helping blind children to achieve maximum functional ability, maintain their optimal health and adapt to life style changes within realistic and attainable goals.

Hence, the aim of the present study is to assess the health needs (physical, mental, social) of the blind school children and provide nursing intervention to meet identified needs.
