TUMORS OF THE HAND
Khaled Abd EI- Wahab Mohamed;
Abstract
The hand is our pnmary tool for manipulating the environment. Tumors of the hand are commonly seen. Fortunately for man, primary malignant tumors are quite rare and a fair number are benign neoplasms, but most of them are non neoplastic tumors or pseudo tumors derived from various muscloskeletal diseases, metabolic disorders and degenerative processes.
Tumors of the hand are usually detected early because of pain, impairment of function, or obvious swelling. They may arise from any tissue of the hand as bone, cartilage, muscle, nerve, skin and its adenexa, subcutaneous tissue, synovium, tendon and vessel, but each has its own peculiar incidence, malignant potential and symptoms.
The most common causes of palpable mass in pediatric hand are ganglion cyst, foreign body and vascular malformation. Generally, squamous cell carcinoma is the most common malignant tumor of the dominant hand. It accounts for from 70 to 90 % of all hand malignancies.
