ROLE OF ULTRASONOGRAPHY AND COLOR DOPPLER FLOW IMAGING TOGETHER WITH CA-125 IN THE ASSESSMENT OF ADNEXAL MASSES

Abstract

The uterine adnexa (gynecologic origin) consist of the ovaries, the Fallopian tubes, and the uterine ligaments. Although adnexal pathology often involves one of these structures, contiguous structures of non-gynecologic origin also may be involved.

Adnexal masses arc com'lnon among women of all ages and two thirds of ovarian tumours are encountered during reproductive years, of those the risk of malignancy in an ovarian mass in patients above
40 years is renuii•kably high although the prcmcnarchal lesions are usually malignant.

Even though histopathological exami1iation of the adnexal lesion is the gold standard for the final diagnosis or exclusion of malignancy, clinical examination, 20, 30, Doppler studies in addition
to CA125 arc reasonably accurate, helpful and. non-invasive tools for
. assessment of adnexal lesions particularfy distin'guishing benign from malignant ovarian tumors.

20 ultrasonography has increasingly become the main diagnostic tool in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Many efforts have been carried out to improve the accuracy of 20 ultrasonography 111 discriminating benign from malignant ovarian lesions.
