The Correlation Between Visceral Adiposity Index And Liver Fibrosis In Chronic Hepatitis (C) Patients.
Mohammed Salama ELrady Matbouly;
Abstract
Hepatitis C virus is the leading cause of chronic liver disease worldwide. It is estimated that 180 million people are chronically infected with HCV, which causes about 460,000 deaths per year.
In Egypt, the seroprevalence of HCV is 10-20 folds higher than that in the United States. Previous studies reports showed that HCV seroprevalence among Egyptian blood donors ranged from 7-15% compared to 0.3- 1.5% worldwide.
Assessment of liver fibrosis in chronic hepatitis C virus infection is considered a relevant part of patient care and key for decision making. Liver fibrosis stage is probably the most robust prognostic factor in several liver diseases; including hepatitis C.
The aim of this study was to assess the correlation between the visceral adiposity index (VAI) and hepatic steatosis, as well as necroinflammatory activity and liver fibrosis in patients with chronic HCV infection.
Cross sectional study was carried out on 50 Egyptian chronic HCV-patients candidate for HCV anti-viral therapy.
Patients were tested at one time points; after histopathological examination of liver biopsy or Fibroscan.
In this study, patients had a mean age of 44.4±8.4 years and a (29 patients) male patients represented 58.0%, while (21 patients) female patients represented 42.0%.
16% of the patients were diabetic (8 patients) and 84% non- diabetic(42 patients).
There were significant positive correlations between VAI and AST, fibrosis stages, grade of liver inflammmation & FIB4. There were significant negative correlations between VAI and platelets& hemoglobin.
There were significant positive correlations between fibrosis stages and age, BMI, TG, AST, grade of liver inflammation & FIB4. There were significant negative correlations between fibrosis stages and HDL, platelets& hemoglobin. NO Correlation between fibrosis stages and Waist circumference among the studied cases.
There were significant positive correlations between FIB4 and age, BMI, TG, AST & stiffness. There were significant negative correlations between FIB4 and HDL, platelets& Hemoglobin. NO Correlation between FIB4 and grade of inflammation among the studied cases.
