Abstract

The work recorded in thi s thesi s deals w ith devel oping s impl e, sensiti ve a nd sel ecti ve meth od s for micro determination of uranium, thorium, and copper in naturall y occurring ores using spectrophotometry and ion sel ecti ve sensor techniques. Thesis is
di v ided into five chapters.

Chapter 1

Describes the vari ous m ethods ava i Iab le in the Iiterature for determination of ura nium, tho rium and copper.
Chapter 2
A urany l - PVC matri x membrane sensor with high selectivity for uran yl i on i s prepared us ing triethylenetetraa mine (TETA). The resulting membra ne senso r exhibits an enhanced and potenti a ll y useful an a l yti ca l response for urany l ion over a wide range of concentration . The sl ope of the caliberation graph

is 26.0 mV/pU022

over the pH range 2.5-3.8. The effects of

iron(IU) and thori um(lV) are eliminated either by addition of 5% diethylenetria minepentaacetic acid (DTPA) and lM KF to the test solution. The senso r i s used for a peri od of about 3 mo nth s without deteruration in respo nse.
