Abstract

Since Freud's earliest attempts to differentiate dissociative disorders from certifiable neurologic diseases, clinicians have been faced with critical challenges.

Multiple neuroimaging teclmiques were invented to help us to see the living brain. These techniques are divided mainly into two categories, structural and functional. The structural neuroimaging techniques involve the CT and MRI, while the functional techniques include PET, SPECT, MRS, fMRI.

Research in areas in which the neurologic substrates are well established (brain injury, vascular disorders, Parkinsons disease, and so forth) have led the way in the use of these teclmologies for the diagnosis of neuropsychiatric disorders.

Interpretation of the scans of neuroimaging based on the firm understanding of the neuroanatomy, comparison between the symmetrical brain structures, and comparison of this image with normal data base

Few small studies have been done with panic disorder suggest that hippocampal hypoperfusion was characteristic of panic. Other found several areas of regional activity. These included the lateral inferior temporal lobes (right and left) and the medial inferior temporal lobes on the left along with the inferior temporal lobes on the right and left. They could not
