Postoperative Endophthalmitis

Amany Ibrahim Abbass Ibrahim;

Abstract

Endophthalrrlltis is an inflammatory reaction involving the ocular contents without extension beyond the sclera, still one of the most serious and vision threatening type of catastrophic complications of ophthalmic surgery despite recent advances in diagnosis and treatment.

Endophthalmitis can occur after intraocular surgery including cataract, glaucoma, corneal and retinal surgery, or less frequently after extraocular surgery such as strabismus and retinal detachment.

During the last two decades the incidence of endophthalmitis after intraocular surgery has been declined to
0.1o/o-0.3o/o due to improved surgical instrumentation, asepsis and the use of prophylactic antibiotics.

Postoperative endophthalmitis may be infective or non

infective.

As regard the etiology of infective postoperative endophtbalrnitis, the sources of infection include airborne contamination, contaminated tissues (the patient's own periocular flora are the most common and the main sources),
